The Jockey Club moves to expel one of its own

Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Racing resumes at the Spa. Four minutes.

Top story

A day after the regulator charged him, the institution moved. The Jockey Club is seeking to remove Marshall Gramm from its membership, following HISA’s enforcement action for fraud and unauthorised access of horse health records.

These are two separate bodies doing two separate things. HISA is the regulator: it can suspend, fine, and refer material to law enforcement, which it has said it intends to do. The Jockey Club is not a regulator. It is a private membership organisation, roughly a hundred people, that maintains the American Stud Book, the register of every thoroughbred foal born in the country. Membership is by invitation and carries no formal power over a licence. Losing it does not stop anyone owning a horse.

Expulsion from the Jockey Club is rare. No hearing has concluded.

The underlying case, in one line for anyone joining today: confidential veterinary records for two horses appeared on social media in June, HISA’s investigation found no outside breach, and Gramm, an owner and Jockey Club member, has said he was the source.

Saturday, both coasts

The Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga has taken shape and Counting Stars heads it. She has beaten the Kentucky Oaks winner Always a Runner twice this season, in the Acorn and again in the Coaching Club American Oaks. Chad Brown saddles My Gun’s Loaded, twice a winner against older horses over this track. Ten furlongs, $600,000, the same trip the colts get in the Travers a week later.

At Del Mar the $1 million Pacific Classic drew eleven. Knightsbridge runs for Bill Mott, off a ten and a quarter length win in the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup on July 18. Nysos was retired to stud on August 3, sound, on a precautionary scan.

This week’s pick. The Alabama. Free, no odds, nothing at stake but your own read. Make your call.
