Arrow Eagle carries Rouget at Deauville

Al Aasy won the Group 2 Grand Prix de Deauville on Sunday by a short neck from Chestnut Rocket, with Arrow Eagle a further half length back in third and the 2,500 metres covered in 2:48.20 (Zeturf). Tom Marquand rode the winner for William Haggas, and Cristian Demuro rode Arrow Eagle for Jean-Claude Rouget (GaloppOnline). Thoroughbred Daily News had named Arrow Eagle among five things to follow in Europe this weekend and described the Rouget runner as the stable star of a trainer in his final month (Thoroughbred Daily News). Jean-Claude Rouget, who is 73, will cease training at the end of September, and the business enters liquidation if no takeover bid arrives by 25 September, a deadline he has given his staff (Thoroughbred Daily News). He has been French champion trainer five times, has won the Prix du Jockey Club six times and the Prix de Diane and the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches four times each, and set a French seasonal record of 178 winners in 1991. Ace Impact, unbeaten winner of the 2023 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, along with Le Havre, Sottsass and Vadeni, all came out of the same yard (Thoroughbred Daily News). Deauville on a Sunday in late August is where a French trainer would want to be counted, and there are not many Sundays left.
