Al Aasy wins his first Group 2 at nine
Al Aasy swooped late to take the Group 2 Lucien Barrière Grand Prix de Deauville on Sunday under Pierre-Charles Boudot, 2,500 metres on heavy ground in 2:48.20, with Chestnut Rocket a neck back and Jean-Claude Rouget’s Arrow Eagle a further half length away in third. The nine-year-old Sea The Stars gelding has now won nine races at Group level, but this was his first at Group 2 (Thoroughbred Daily News).
It came on his 32nd start and took his record to 13 wins, six seconds and three thirds for 853,177 euros. William Haggas trains him for Shadwell Estate Company. Haggas said the horse had shown great courage, that he is a lovely horse, and that when conditions suit he is capable of doing some very good things. Boudot deputised at short notice after Tom Marquand and Maureen Haggas were grounded at Duxford by a technical problem with their plane (Thoroughbred Daily News, Racing Post).

The race was run on a Sunday for the first time, as part of a new bank holiday weekend fixture (Sporting Life) |
A thin list today by design. Sunday’s European programme ran to four meetings and produced one Group 2, four Group 3s and one Listed race. Everything verified is here, and nothing has been added to make up a number.
