Paddy Payne, who raised eight jockeys, dies at 90
Paddy Payne has died at 90, the Hawera born horseman passing at home at Miners Rest near Ballarat on Tuesday morning. He and his wife Mary moved to Victoria in the early 1980s, and eight of their ten children rode professionally. Patrick won 19 Group 1 races and Michelle became the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup, on Prince Of Penzance in 2015 (The Straight, ABC News).
His last two runners in New Zealand both won at Ellerslie. Our Paddy Boy took the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes there in 1980 and the Group 3 Champagne Stakes, and was later sold to Robert Sangster for $300,000. “My last two runners in New Zealand were Group wins at Ellerslie,” Payne said. Racing Victoria chief executive Aaron Morrison said his positive influence on female jockey participation cannot be undersold (LOVERACING.NZ, ANZ Bloodstock News).
