Tawny Port takes the Bowling Green Gold Cup and looks at Melbourne

Tawny Port came from mid-pack to win the Marsh McLennan Bowling Green Gold Cup Invitational on the closing card at Kentucky Downs on Wednesday, two and one sixteenth miles on turf in 3:27.91. Flavien Prat rode the seven-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile for Miguel Clement and Peachtree Stable, running down Lambeth by three quarters of a length, with Greystone third. Goldeneye had led by double figures at halfway (Thoroughbred Daily News).
Clement said afterwards that the Melbourne Cup on 2 November is a real option, that he would need to speak to John Fort of Peachtree first, and that he would be game to do it, why not. He was there once while on the Flying Start programme and called it a great race. Tawny Port has now won seven of thirty four starts and earned 2,801,631 dollars (Thoroughbred Daily News).

Things to know today

1 How’s Al Today won the Pepsi Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile on the same closing card, a mile on firm turf in 1:34.84 and a second win in eleven days for the Munnings colt, who had taken a turf allowance on 29 August. Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr. rode for Riley Mott and Gold Square, and it was a first black type win. Jas was second and Agate third. Admiral’s Order was scratched (Thoroughbred Daily News)
2 Mike Repole has offered to pay up to ten million dollars for an independent investigation of HISA, in a letter to Everett Dobson, the chairman of The Jockey Club, and Lisa Lazarus, the chief executive of HISA. He wants it to cover governance, security and practices, and the extent of the connections between the two bodies, and he asked for an answer by today. A HISA spokesperson said the authority has nothing to hide and is open to any and all good faith conversations about the integrity of its systems and operations. HISA’s bylaws bar it from accepting donations from covered persons. Nothing has been agreed and no investigation has begun (Thoroughbred Daily News)
3 Sovereignty still leads the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic rankings on 383 votes, including 24 of the first place votes, ahead of Forever Young on 363 and Knightsbridge on 319. Leading Change enters the top ten in sixth on 134 votes after the Travers, and Napoleon Solo is ninth on 91. Bill Mott trains three of the ten. The panel publishes again on 22 and 29 September and finishes on 6 October, before the seven million dollar Classic at Keeneland on 31 October (Paulick Report)
4 Churchill Downs opens a fourteen day September meet this evening, first post 5pm Eastern on its three Twilight Thursdays and 12.45pm on most other days. The meet runs to Sunday 27 September and carries 15.2 million dollars in purses, an average of 1,085,000 dollars a day, with eleven stakes worth 3.6 million between them. Saturday’s programme alone is worth 2.237 million dollars (Churchill Downs)
5 Nine are probable for the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on Saturday, worth one million dollars and a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In. Notable Speech returns to defend the race for Charles Appleby and Godolphin with William Buick riding, and Deterministic, Silius, Vina Arana, Archivist, Gas Me Up, Irish Aces, Itsastormymonday and the supplemented Pierre complete them. Six graded stakes make up the Turf Champions Day card (Woodbine, Paulick Report)
6 Country Life Farm has a Mandaloun filly in Book 1 at Keeneland, hip 271, out of the Speightstown mare In It for the Gold and a half-sister to Englishman. Mike and Josh Pons own the Maryland farm, Christy Holden is the general manager, and the filly is consigned by John and Sandy Stuart’s Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services. Pons said it is rare air for a small farm from Maryland, actually two farms and about 300 acres, and that the whole farm is crazy enthused (Thoroughbred Daily News)

Saffie Osborne takes the ride on Highwayman in the St Leger

Saffie Osborne will ride Highwayman in the Betfred St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday, going for a first classic win. The Persian King colt is trained by Joseph O’Brien and has won twice in a row, a maiden at Killarney in July and the Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown in August. O’Brien also has the Sea The Stars colt Enceladus, and both stood their ground on Thursday when eleven were declared for the 250th running, one fewer than the twelve entered. Osborne said her agent texted her to say she was riding him and that she was very excited, that he looks a really nice horse and that it is great to get the opportunity (Thoroughbred Daily News)
Australasia

Aidan O’Brien, Yoshito Yahagi, Dermot Weld and Francis-Henri Graffard were among the trainers who had nominated. Key runners only. As of the Wednesday 9 September close. Every figure was read this morning at the page it links to. The indices are the Associated Press wire, which gives point changes as well as levels. Gold is the December contract and crude is the October contract. The dollar index is the previous close on a live quote page read after the New York close, and the Investrade review for the same session reports the index a little higher on the day, which agrees. Bitcoin is omitted for a fifth edition running, because the source we can reach still states a Tuesday close rather than a Wednesday one. Nothing here is estimated, rounded from memory or carried forward.
