Court delay gives Rouget a last Arc with Arrow Eagle

Jean-Claude Rouget will train through 6 October after the Commercial Tribunal in Pau accepted a request for a short delay in the winding up of his business. The hearing takes place on 29 September and the court announces its decision on 6 October, two days after the Arc. That leaves Rouget free to run Arrow Eagle in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on 4 October, and the horse will be his final runner (Thoroughbred Daily News, Equidia, Racing Post).
Arrow Eagle is a younger half-brother to Ace Impact, with whom Rouget won the 2023 Arc. He finished sixth in last year’s Arc and went on to take the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak over a mile and seven and a half furlongs. Rouget’s training career was due to end this month after 48 years and more than 7,000 winners, among them two Arcs and 14 French Classics (Racing Post, Thoroughbred Daily News).

1 Betfred would walk away from its sponsorship of the Derby, the Oaks, both Guineas and the St Leger if October’s budget raises Machine Games Duty, founder Fred Done wrote in The Sunday Times. Done said the firm has a verbal agreement to renew for a further three years, but that doubling the duty to 40 per cent would close 495 shops, 45 per cent of its estate, with the loss of 2,475 shop jobs (Racing Post)
2 Lordano won the Deutsches St Leger at Dortmund on Sunday for a second time, only the second horse to win the race twice after El Tango. 8 Almaqam will head for the Champion Stakes at Ascot rather than the Arc, Ed Walker said, adding that if he does what he did at York he will be hard to beat. Walker also confirmed that Ten Bob Tony will go for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on the same card (Sporting Life)
9 Charlie Appleby has pencilled in Champagne Stakes winner Desert Castle for the Dewhurst and May Hill winner Musical Times for the Fillies’ Mile, with the Prix Marcel Boussac an option for her if the ground is quick at Newmarket and softer in France.
