Tempted wins the Premiere Stakes by three lengths before the Everest

Tempted won the Group 2 Precise Air Premiere Stakes over 1200 metres at Royal Randwick on Saturday by three lengths, with Savvy Hallie second and Marhoona third. The Godolphin mare is trained by Ciaron Maher and was ridden by Chad Schofield, and the race has long been the recognised Randwick lead-up for the sprinters pointed at the richest turf race run in Australia (Breednet)
Godolphin expect to run her in The Everest, subject to how she pulls up from Saturday. “It’s pretty clear she’s in even better form, so we look forward to contesting the title again,” said Godolphin’s Jason Walsh. The stable foreman Jo Gerard-Dubord said that everything she does she does very specially and that there is a touch more to come (Just Horse Racing) Savvy Hallie, second to her on Saturday, has since been confirmed in Mulberry Racing’s slot for the race, with Brad Widdup saying the slotholder and the mare’s owners had finalised an agreement and that she had come through the Premiere really well (Hawkesbury Race Club) Full fields and barrier positions are Racing Australia content and are not reproduced here.

Things to know today

1 Mr Monaco won the Group 3 Lexus Bart Cummings over 2520 metres at Flemington on Saturday by a length and a quarter from Lithdeel, with Valiant King third, and the win carries a ballot exemption into the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Ciaron Maher trains him and the Tasmanian apprentice Jabez Johnstone rode, his first stakes win on the mainland. It is the stable’s second Cup exemption of this carnival after Shockletz took The Archer at the same track last month. Maher called Johnstone a little ripper, and said the horse had been aimed at Randwick before the weather moved him to Melbourne at acceptances. Racing Victoria has since penalised him 1.5 kilograms for the win, taking him to 52.5 kilograms for the Cup, and his stablemate Juja Kibo was penalised 2 kilograms for The Metropolitan and now carries 53.5 kilograms (Victoria Racing Club, Breednet)
2 Well Written finished sixth in Saturday’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Royal Randwick and lost her unbeaten record, and the $10 million Golden Eagle at the same track remains the task for the New Zealand Horse of the Year. Stephen Marsh, who trains her, said she was a little bit stressed and a little bit overheated in muggy conditions but seemed really good an hour later, and listed a rail-trapped run three back, the ground and a month between runs against her. She carried 55 kilograms where three of those who beat her carried 50 (NZ Racing News)
3 Ka Ying Rising trials at Randwick on Tuesday morning before his defence of The Everest, the David Hayes trained sprinter meeting Joliestar, Angel Capital and Ninja along with the King Charles III Stakes pair Amazing Journey and Apocalyptic, with Zac Purton riding. The Shamexpress gelding is the highest rated horse in the world on 135, won 21 in a row in Hong Kong and was the first horse trained outside Australia to win the race. “I want to see him trial like he does in Hong Kong. He doesn’t have to win, but he probably will,” Hayes said, calling it basically a dress rehearsal (NZ Racing News)
4 Royal Law won the Listed Swan Draught Kalgoorlie Cup over 2300 metres on Saturday by a head from Sowar, with Ginger Baker third, running 2:23.44 on a Good 4, and his connections had to wait on a dismissed protest. Ashley Maley trains the six-year-old and Natasha Faithfull rode him at 54 kilograms. Maley bought him for $12,000 at an Inglis Digital online sale in 2024, having been bred by Bob and Sandra Peters, and he is now six wins and ten placings from 25 starts. He is the 43rd stakes winner for Pierro (Breednet)
5 St Lawrence took his first black type win at his 37th start in the Listed Carlton Draught Murray Bridge Gold Cup over 1600 metres on Saturday, beating Sir Kingsford. The eight-year-old is a New Zealand bred son of Redwood, bred by Gerry Harvey and raced in his first season for Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, and is now trained at Cranbourne by Gavin Bedggood. Noel Callow rode him and said Bedggood has turned the horse around, and that he had been told to ride more positive than negative. He has ten wins from 37 starts (NZ Racing News)
6 Racing NSW will consult its country clubs on new Financial Management Minimum Standards and a revised education and support framework, and is developing a regional track management support model alongside the existing track curator traineeship and a traineeship for future club administrators. The chair Saranne Cooke set it out in her participants’ bulletin during the regulator’s Country Conference in Sydney, saying the discussions would help shape the standards and the framework and assist clubs to focus on their core operations (The Straight)
