Godolphin go to 4,600,000 guineas for Europe’s dearest yearling colt

Lot 130, a Night Of Thunder colt out of the Lope De Vega mare My Astra, a Group 1 runner-up, made 4,600,000 guineas to Godolphin’s Anthony Stroud on the opening day of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale at Newmarket on Tuesday, a European record for a yearling colt. Consigned by Norelands and bred by Sunderland Holdings, he headed a session that turned over 46,778,000 guineas, up 16 per cent on last year (Tattersalls)
Coolmore pushed the price in 200,000 guinea increments before Stroud got the last bid at the parade ring, the colt passing the 4,300,000 guineas given for the Wootton Bassett colt Poker. Godolphin took eleven yearlings for 15,730,000 guineas, about a third of the day’s turnover, and 115 of the 135 offered were sold, a clearance rate of 85 per cent (Racing Post)

Things to know today

1 The Irish Budget gave Horse Racing Ireland 81.6 million euro for 2027, up from 79.3 million, with the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund rising to 102 million and greyhound racing taking 20.4 million, and betting duty held at 2 per cent. Agriculture minister Martin Heydon tied the extra money to the implementation of the Indecon review recommendations on welfare and integrity, and the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland is to bring in a social impact fund levy at a rate not yet set (Racing Post, The Irish Field)
2 Nemone Routh said the Aga Khan Studs will discuss Daryz on Thursday and will probably release something by the end of that day, the French racing manager saying it would be great to think he could win a third Arc but that it is difficult because he is so valuable now and they do have a stallion operation. No decision had been taken as of Tuesday (Irish Examiner)
3 Aidan O’Brien is considering the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on British Champions Day for Constitution River, which would be the colt’s first try at a mile, and the Champion Stakes for Gstaad, a step up in distance, the trainer saying he might have been doing the wrong thing with the pair. Sun Goddess goes to the Breeders’ Cup rather than the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket (Racing Post)
4 The British Horseracing Authority is lobbying against a proposal to double the standard rate of machine games duty to 40 per cent ahead of the Budget on 28 October, after modelling by Regulus Partners found it would close about 4,050 betting shops within three years, cost 28,000 jobs and take 92 million pounds a year out of racing, which the BHA’s Greg Swift put at a third of the sport’s income from betting, while cutting the duty’s own yield by 32 per cent to 155 million pounds (British Horseracing Authority, Racing Post)

The McKinzie colt out of the Broodmare of the Year Puca ran thirteen times, finished in the first three on ten of them and earned 2.3 million dollars, winning the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby, finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and placing in six Grade 1s in all. Spendthrift’s chief operating officer Ned Toffey called him a rare combination of talent, pedigree and looks (Horse Racing Nation, Paulick Report)

Ka Ying Rising beaten in his Everest trial at Randwick

Ka Ying Rising was narrowly beaten by Ninja in a trial at Randwick on Tuesday, on a soft track with longer grass, ahead of The Everest at Royal Randwick on 17 October. David Hayes said the horse trialled better than last year and that the state of the track was not in his favour, and that a trial is a trial, because they do not screw him down for it, they screw him down for the race. Zac Purton said he had a really good blow, more than he would have after a race in Hong Kong (Idol Horse)

The FTSE 100 and the CAC 40 are the Tuesday 6 October close, the most recent to have happened. The currency figures are daily closes and are given with the previous day’s close beside them rather than a percentage. Gold and Brent have no official close and the levels are the previous settled figures printed by the source named beside them, with no percentage shown. Bitcoin trades around the clock and the figure is that source’s daily close for Tuesday 6 October. The DAX is not published today: the only source carrying a Tuesday close printed two different levels for it on the same page, and no second source had yet settled the figure, so rather than choose between them we have left it out.
