Book 1 ends with 17 yearlings at a million guineas or more

Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale closed on Thursday on turnover of 126,516,000 guineas, one per cent below last year’s 127,226,000 and done with 11 per cent fewer horses changing hands. The average rose 12 per cent to 359,420 guineas and the median almost 10 per cent to 230,000 guineas, with a clearance rate of 85 per cent across the three sessions at Park Paddocks (Racing Post)
A Night Of Thunder colt out of Capture The Heart took the final day at 2,200,000 guineas, bought online by Ace Stud from Fittocks Stud on behalf of the South African owner breeder Nick Jonsson, and a Frankel colt out of Crystal Zvezda went to Godolphin at 2,000,000 from Longview Stud. Book 1 finished with a record equalling 17 yearlings at a million guineas or more, and Sara Cumani said the colt has been a superstar ever since he was born (Tattersalls)

Things to know today

1 Godolphin spent a record 26,910,000 guineas on 25 yearlings at Book 1, 21.3 per cent of the sale’s turnover and their largest share since 2019, against 19,625,000 for 23 lots last year and a previous high of 25,355,000 for 35 in 2022. Anthony Stroud said they had been underbidder on quite a few, so it was not as though they had not tried, and that he would rather see the sale cut to two days because three days is why you get lulls (Racing Post)
2 Brilliant Star won the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Beckford Stakes over a mile and six furlongs at Bath on Thursday by two lengths under Robert Havlin for John and Thady Gosden, beating Littlecote and Little Dorrit in a field of twelve on her first run since finishing fourth in the Ribblesdale. Havlin said everything in her pedigree suggested it was what she would like, and that if she stays in training there are some nice races for her next year (Racing Post)
3 Emmet Mullins runs two in the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap, Cock And Bull under James Doyle and the Listed winner Dream On Baby, who won on the Flat at Tramore, under Gavin Ryan. Mullins said Cock And Bull stuck at his task well in Galway and that the extended two miles will definitely help him, which had been the plan since Galway, and that Dream On Baby is unexposed on the Flat and this will be her first run in a handicap (Shropshire Star)
4 Ed Bethell will send Coedana to the Qatar Racing British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes at Ascot, only her second run at Group 1 level after she was beaten three and a quarter lengths by Hotazhell in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich in July and then won the Princess Royal from the Classic placed Inis Mor. Bethell said the Princess Royal was very much a stepping stone for that race, and separately that he is retiring the 2023 Sprint Cup winner Regional, a horse he is forever in the debt of (At The Races)
5 Andrew Balding leads Aidan O’Brien by 107,319 pounds in the British trainers’ championship, a lead that followed Blue Bolt’s Group 1 win in the Sun Chariot at Newmarket last weekend, with O’Brien chasing an eighth British title (Racing Post)
6 The Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund rises to 102 million euro for 2027, an increase of 2.9 million, with Horse Racing Ireland taking 80 per cent of it and so moving to 81.6 million euro from 79.3 million. Martin Heydon, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, said the proposed increase will be linked to the implementation of the Indecon Review’s recommendations on equine and greyhound welfare and integrity, and Horse Racing Ireland is preparing a programme of 396 fixtures next year (The Irish Field, Sport for Business)
7 Musical Times stayed unbeaten in the Group 1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on Friday, winning by a length under William Buick for Charlie Appleby after being held up in traffic, from Aidan O’Brien’s Haven. She had won the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster last month, and O’Brien said Haven is going to be a middle-distance filly (Shropshire Star)

Joliestar takes the Waller slot in The Everest

Chris Waller Racing have confirmed Joliestar for their slot in The Everest, the 20 million Australian dollar sprint at Royal Randwick on 17 October, a third attempt at the race for the six-year-old Zoustar mare after she was seventh to Bella Nipotina in 2024 and fifth to Ka Ying Rising last year. She has won the Canterbury Stakes and the TJ Smith at Group 1 level this year and was third in the King Charles Stakes at Royal Ascot, and has ten wins and eight placings from 22 starts. Eight of the twelve slots had been filled earlier this week, with final declarations due on 13 October (Breednet, Races.com.au)

Purton wants Ka Ying Rising off the grass

Zac Purton said he keeps telling David Hayes to stop letting Ka Ying Rising eat grass, because the Hong Kong sprinter does not eat grass at home and is a racehorse, not a pet. Ninja beat him by a neck in 59.46 seconds in a Randwick trial on a soft seven surface, neither pushed hard, and Purton said he has been trying to tell Hayes for two years that the horse does not like soft ground, that he labours in it when you want him to pick up, and that he will improve but is going to need to (Idol Horse)
