Ka Ying Rising draws barrier 11 for his Everest defence

Ka Ying Rising will start from barrier 11, the second widest gate, in the A$20 million Group 1 Everest over 1200 metres at Royal Randwick on Saturday 17 October, with twelve to line up. The David Hayes trained gelding is chasing a 22nd straight win, which would be a record for a Hong Kong trained horse, and Zac Purton rides again after winning last year’s running from gate seven (Horse Racing Nation, Paulick Report)
Hayes was unbothered by the draw and said he would rather be wide than caught in. “I’d be more worried about getting boxed in from (barriers) one, two or three,” he said, adding that “I’d be more worried about a heavy 10 than barrier 11.” Tempted drew barrier one, Angel Capital two, Ninja three and Jimmysstar eight (Horse Racing Nation) Key runners only. Things to know today

1 The final field is out for the 150th Group 1 Caulfield Cup over 2400 metres at Caulfield on Saturday, worth $6,545,000. Half Yours, who won it last year, drew barrier seven with 57.5kg for Tony and Calvin McEvoy and Mark Zahra, and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes winner Cosmic Crusader drew 17 with 56kg for Andrea Leek and William Pike. Ciaron Maher has five in the field and three of the four emergencies. The overseas trained runners are Roger Varian’s Enfjaar in barrier one, Joseph O’Brien’s Starford in 15 and Harry Charlton’s Wine Dark Sea in 19. In the Group 1 Thousand Guineas over 1600 metres on the same card, the unbeaten Toronado filly Over The Bridge drew the widest gate in a field of 13 for Maher and Zahra (ANZ Bloodstock News, Breednet) Key runners only. 2 A Showtime colt topped the Magic Millions Gold Coast Horses in Training Sale on Monday at $400,000, lot 127 out of Mileyva, offered by Nolen Racing as agent and bought by Bridle Bloodstock for Apollo Ng of Hong Kong. He had breezed the fastest of the sale at 10 seconds flat on the Gold Coast course proper last month. Eighty three of the 161 catalogued sold for $6,149,500 at a 72 per cent clearance, an average of $74,090 and a median of $50,000, with average, median and clearance all up on last year. Managing director Barry Bowditch said there was “a good vibe with a great cross section of buyers here today” and that the company is “committed to this date and format into the future” (Magic Millions, Breednet)
3 Gerringong took the Group 3 ATC Nivison over 1200 metres at Rosehill on Saturday by a head from Arabian Rose, the Blue Point mare running 1:10.05 on a Good 4 under Tyler Schiller for Chris and Corey Munce. She is a John Singleton homebred out of the More Than Ready mare This Time Bridie, has passed $1 million in earnings from three wins and seven placings in 17 starts, and is the 35th stakes winner for her sire. Corey Munce said she “had to do it the tough way,” with the ATC Invitation over 1400 metres next (Breednet)
4 Long Leaf has his first stakes winner, the three-year-old Big Red Zoom taking the Listed WATC Max Simmonds Stakes over 1000 metres at Ascot on Saturday by a nose from Afireofgidgeecoals in 0:59.13 on a Soft 5 for Mitchell Pateman and Holly Watson. The Fastnet Rock son stands at Grassdale Pastoral in Gippsland at $5,500 after moving from Rangeview Stud in Western Australia. Big Red Zoom is the fourth foal and fourth winner for the unraced My Admiration mare Sister Zoe, bred and owned by Pete and Carol Gurney (Breednet)
5 St Mark’s Basilica added a stakes winner in Europe on Saturday, the Ed Dunlop trained three-year-old Pathein winning the Listed Prix le Fabuleux over 1800 metres at Chantilly by three quarters of a length under Mickael Barzalona. The Coolmore stallion covers mares in Australia this spring at $38,500. Pathein is two wins and two placings from seven starts, and the second stakes winner from three foals to race out of the Shamardal mare Excellent View (Breednet)
6 Auckland Thoroughbred Racing is turning Pukekohe’s number one grass into a dedicated trials track so trainers no longer need the course proper, with construction well underway and senior jockeys and participants having inspected the surface and approved further work. The club is also seeking Auckland Council approval to rezone part of its land for housing, with the proceeds going to infrastructure and an investment fund. Chief executive Paul Wilcox said “that’s the logical step, it’s to build that investment fund so we have a recurring income,” and that the club is putting $5 million into stakes across Pukekohe and Ellerslie this year (Racing News NZ)

A Book 1 reject tops Tattersalls Book 2 at 600,000 guineas

A Blue Point colt withdrawn from Book 1 after showing signs of travel sickness came back as a wildcard and topped Monday’s opening session of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale at 600,000 guineas, lot 487A out of Floriade, sold by Ballyhimikin Stud to Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock. Jack Hanly, son of the stud’s owner James Hanly, said “it has all worked out in the end and perhaps it all happened for luck.” Turnover passed 25 million guineas on the day with 14 lots making 300,000 guineas or more. A Lope De Vega filly out of My Eyes Adore You made 550,000 guineas, Hillwood Stud selling on behalf of First Bloodstock to Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for Peter Harris, and Amo Racing went to 475,000 guineas with Emmet Mullins for a Frankel colt out of Kurious.
