A Classic ticket won at York

America  ·  Thursday 20 August
Morning. A Breeders’ Cup Classic place went to England overnight, to a colt whose owner’s name is on the race.

Things to know
1 Item won the Juddmonte International at York by a head from Almaqam, with Constitution River third and Ombudsman, the world’s top-ranked horse, only fourth. Item was short of room twice in the straight, was switched right by Colin Keane, and got up in the final strides; the time was 2m 8.44s over a mile and a quarter (Sporting Life). The win carries the only automatic Breeders’ Cup Classic berth on offer in a European race, and Item is a Frankel colt owned by Juddmonte, so the sponsor won its own race and the ticket that goes with it. (York Racecourse)
2 The Alabama drew six. From the rail out on Saturday at Saratoga: Nycon, Ati Girl, Measure, My Gun’s Loaded, A.P.’s Girl and Counting Stars. Grade 1, ten furlongs, $600,000 (The Daily Gazette). Counting Stars has won the Acorn and the Coaching Club American Oaks at the meet, and an Alabama would make it three straight Grade 1s in one Saratoga summer, a first; her owners at West Point are in their 35th year and closing on $100 million in purses, and part-owner Chip Gehrke believes a win here would wrap up an Eclipse Award (TDN, Horse Racing Nation). Kentucky Oaks winner Always a Runner skips it for the $1 million Cotillion at Parx on 19 September, Chad Brown said, though his My Gun’s Loaded makes her stakes debut in the race, two for two at the meet by four and a quarter lengths and by three. (TDN)
3 Flavien Prat had to pick a side in today’s Cab Calloway. The $150,000 New York Stallion Series division, a mile on the inner turf at 4:39pm, comes down to Ray Handal’s Chummers and Graham Motion’s Jaxer, both on two-race streaks. Prat rode both in all four of those wins and chose Jaxer, who returns from a nine-month layoff. Handal said he was very surprised by the call. (DRF)
4 Greyjoy won Wednesday’s Statue of Liberty division of the Stallion Series on the inner turf for John Terranova, a week after finishing second in a claiming race, beating Morning Prayer with Tyler Gaffalione up. (NYRA)
5 Gaffalione has been handed a four-day Saratoga ban for a crop violation. The dates have not been confirmed. (Horse Racing Nation)
6 Golden Tempo is training straight into the Travers. The Derby and Belmont winner missed the Jim Dandy through illness and targets 29 August for Cherie DeVaux. (NYRA)
7 Luis Saez sits two wins short of 4,000 for his career as the meet moves into its closing fortnight. (The Daily Gazette)
8 The Pacific Classic goes Saturday at Del Mar, with Knightsbridge heading the field and Forged Steel shipping west for it. (The Daily Gazette)
The Alabama field six entered, by post
1 Nycon
2 Ati Girl
3 Measure
4 My Gun’s Loaded Chad Brown
5 A.P.’s Girl
