Guest House takes down the Rosehill record
Guest House came back from a Golden Slipper autumn to win the $250,000 Group 3 ATC San Domenico Stakes over 1100 metres at Rosehill on Saturday, beating Blue Door by a length and a quarter with Music Time third (Just Racing). The Home Affairs colt, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr and ridden by Zac Lloyd, ran 1:02.41 and took down Westicaro’s 2007 Rosehill course record of 1:02.51 (Breednet). He is the first Golden Slipper winning colt or gelding to win again as an older horse since Pierro in 2012, and the first to put the Slipper and the San Domenico together since Tierce in 1991 (Just Racing). “Amazing win by a very good horse. He had to race so genuine,” Price said (Just Racing). Lloyd was in no rush: “I just needed a run, but I knew I had a very good horse underneath me so I wasn’t rushing. He’s a big, robust colt and he’s only going to get better with every run” (Breednet). Three wins and two placings from five starts have earned $3.4 million, and Price named the Golden Rose, The Everest and the Coolmore Stud Stakes as the spring targets, with Coolmore now heading the ownership group and the colt going to their Hunter Valley farm at the end of it (Breednet). Leading Change wins the Travers
Leading Change won the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga, the $1.25 million race over a mile and a quarter run at 6:35pm Eastern on Saturday, which was 8:35am here this morning (New York Racing Association). Manny Franco rode for Brad Cox and beat Preakness winner Napoleon Solo and John Velazquez by half a length, with Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Golden Tempo and Jose Ortiz third, a length and three quarters behind the runner up, and Renegade eighth (Daily Gazette). “We were substituting talent over seasoning, and that means a lot. It’s very hard for a horse to come into the Midsummer Derby and only have two starts,” Cox said (Daily Gazette). Franco got the trip he expected: “We turned for home, I put him on the outside and he just leveled out” (Daily Gazette). Cherie DeVaux said Golden Tempo “was far back. It just didn’t work out with the lack of pace” (Daily Gazette). This item has been updated since the edition was sent, which carried the race as still to be run.
