Nor’easter costs Belmont its weekend and six graded stakes

A nor’easter has cost Belmont Park its whole weekend. The New York Racing Association cancelled Saturday and Sunday racing and closed the track to the public for 26 and 27 September, with extremely high winds and heavy rain forecast for Long Island. The National Weather Service placed the island under a wind advisory for both days, with gusts exceeding 50 miles an hour. Six graded stakes go unrun: the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, Flower Bowl, Vosburgh, Gallant Bloom, Belmont Turf Sprint and Winter Memories (New York Racing Association).
All six come back on Thursday 1 October. The New York State Gaming Commission has approved added cards on Wednesday 30 September and Wednesday 7 October, and the 30 September card will carry the overnight races written for the lost weekend. The 175,000 dollar Joseph A. Gimma moves to Friday 2 October. Delaware Park shifted its entire Delaware Handicap card to Saturday 3 October, and Saturday night’s Monmouth at Meadowlands card was called off as well (Thoroughbred Daily News).

Donor Advised was second and Boutwell Time a distant third. The win took last year’s Eclipse Award winning three-year-old filly past three million dollars, and she is already qualified for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff through the Ogden Phipps (America’s Best Racing, Horse Racing Nation)
3 First Dude has died at 19 at Double Diamond Farm, the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association announced on Thursday. He raced as a homebred for Donald Dizney with Bob Baffert, won the Hollywood Gold Cup and was placed in five Grade 1 races, the Preakness, Belmont and Travers among them (Thoroughbred Daily News)
4 Trainer Jose Silva Jr faces a maximum of a lifetime ban and a 50,000 dollar fine under a notice of violation posted on the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority’s rulings site on 11 September, charging five rule breaches arising from an investigators’ search at Canterbury Park. Atitlan was second in the Del Mar Handicap last month, a neck behind Test Score, with Atomic Age and Mondego back for the rematch (Paulick Report)
