Nineteen stand their ground for the Arc

Nineteen horses remain in Sunday’s five million euro Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp after Monday morning’s first forfeit stage, with last year’s winner Daryz still at the head of the list. Francis Graffard has three in, Daryz and the Prix Niel winner Varandir for the Aga Khan Studs and Sunly, who is expected instead to go to Saturday’s Prix Royallieu (Racing Post)
Aidan O’Brien cut eight entries to three, keeping Minnie Hauk, Diamond Necklace and Benvenuto Cellini and taking out Jan Brueghel, Hawk Mountain, Montreal, Pierre Bonnard and Constitution River. He said he does intend to run all three, that Ryan Moore has the choice, and that he would probably think Diamond Necklace is the pick without being sure. Christophe Ferland removed the 2024 runner up Aventure, whose target is the Prix de l’Opera on the same card (Racing Post, irishracing.com)

Things to know today

1 Coolmore led the first day of trade at the Goffs Orby Sale, MV Magnier giving 1.4 million euro for the Justify half sister to Minnie Hauk. The February foal is out of Multilingual, a half sister to the Summer Mile winner Tilsit, and comes from the family of Kingman. She was consigned by Camas Park Stud as lot 154 on behalf of the breeder Ben Sangster. Magnier said that if she is anywhere as good as her sister they will be doing all right, confirmed Minnie Hauk will be retired at the end of the season with Justify under consideration for her first mating, and said there is a strong possibility that Diamond Necklace stays in training next year (Thoroughbred Daily News)
2 Blue Bolt was confirmed for Saturday’s Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket along with 11 other fillies and mares, among them the Aidan O’Brien pair Precise and True Love, last year’s winner Fallen Angel and her stablemate Evolutionist for Karl Burke, and Paddy Twomey’s City Of Memphis. The Andrew Balding filly carries the Juddmonte colours and was second in the race 12 months ago. Barry Mahon, European racing manager for Juddmonte, said finishing second was her emergence into the Group 1 sphere, that she has done nothing but improve since, and that it would be nice to go back and go one better (Thoroughbred Daily News)
3 Senorita Bonita will have blood tests and will not run again this season after finishing a well beaten fifth behind Sun Goddess in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes on Saturday. Chris Wall, racing manager to the owners Victorious Forever, said Simon and Ed Crisford took blood on Monday because no labs were open over the weekend, that nothing obvious had come to light, and that she emptied out in the last furlong, which is not her, the strength of her finish having always been the best part of her race. She has won three of her five starts, among them the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge in July, and will be put away for her three year old season (Thoroughbred Daily News, irishracing.com)
4 Markus Klug will return to training and will do it at Mulheim, the four time German champion telling Sport-Welt on Monday that it is definitely clear he will start again and definitely certain it will be there, and that when exactly and in what framework will be decided within the next two weeks. He was the trainer at Gestut Rottgen from 2010 to 2023, took his titles in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and retired in February 2025. He saddled the German Derby winners Sea The Moon, Windstoss and Weltstar, all three of them now at stud (Thoroughbred Daily News)
5 Amy Marnane has been elected chair of the Breeze-Up Consignors Association with immediate effect, replacing Brendan Holland, with Thomond O’Mara of Knockanglass Stables succeeding John Cullinan as vice chair. Marnane runs Bansha House Stables with her father Con, and Mark Grant, Norman Williamson, Ger Kennedy and Rodgie Kavanagh join the committee. She said the sector has gone from strength to strength, that there is a real shared ambition among members to produce horses that become top class racehorses, and that Holland and Cullinan are owed a huge debt for the foundations they put in place. Breeze-up graduates to win at the top level this year include Hotazhell and Title Role (Thoroughbred Daily News)
6 Jean-Claude Rouget will saddle his last runner under licence in the Arc, the dual winner of the race ending 48 years as a trainer with Arrow Eagle, who stands his ground after taking the Prix Royal-Oak last season. Germany is represented by Bright Light for Andreas Suborics, who would give the country a fourth win in the race and a third since 2011, and Japan by Admire Terra and Meisho Tabaru. John and Thady Gosden hold an option on a free supplementary entry for Friendly Soul, earned by winning the Prix Vermeille (Racing Post)
7 Ballydoyle runs Anymore in the 4.25 Irish EBF fillies maiden over a mile at Cork today, a leg of the Smullen Series. The Wootton Bassett filly is a full sister to the Nassau and Pretty Polly winner Whirl, comes from the family of the Galileo mares Hydrangea and Hermosa, and is ridden by Gavin Ryan. The same yard runs the experienced Golden Ring under Wayne Lordan and the Frankel filly Somebody Loves Me, an 800,000 guineas Tattersalls December foal purchase, while Ger Lyons has the unraced Gods Love for Newtown Anner Stud Farm and Paddy Twomey the newcomer Duchessofaquitaine, a full sister to The Lion In Winter (Thoroughbred Daily News)

Keeneland September becomes the largest auction ever held

Keeneland September closed with a through the ring gross of 536,737,900 dollars for 2,856 horses, the highest figure recorded at any thoroughbred auction anywhere and 5.14 per cent above last year. The average rose 6.87 per cent to 187,933 dollars and the median 6.25 per cent to 85,000 dollars, both records, and 70 yearlings made a million dollars or more against a previous best of 56. The sale ran over 12 sessions from 14 to 26 September and was topped by a 3.7 million dollar Into Mischief colt bought by MV Magnier with Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm from the Glennwood Farm draft. Gun Runner led the sires with 57 yearlings for 43,672,000 dollars, and Shannon Arvin, Keeneland president and chief executive, said it is incredible to think they set a world record a year ago and have now surpassed it (Breednet)

Blue Door runs her way into the Everest

Blue Door secured an Everest slot by taking the Group 3 ATC Heritage Stakes over 1,100 metres for Bjorn Baker, the Stay Inside filly having now won twice and finished second twice in four starts for John Singleton. Newgate Farm and GPI Racing, who won the race in 2023 with Think About It, hold the slot she fills. She joins Ka Ying Rising, who runs for the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Ninja for Fairway Thoroughbreds and Headwall in the 20 million dollar race at Randwick (Breednet)

Puro Magic is pointed at Hong Kong before the paddocks

Puro Magic could meet Ka Ying Rising in Hong Kong in December after Sunday’s Group 1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama, her first success at the top level at the sixth attempt. Masamichi Hashimoto, president of the owners Three H Racing, said that if they are able to go to Hong Kong they will probably go there, that given her age he imagines she will then head to the breeding shed, that the decision will be taken in consultation with the trainer, and that he just wants her to beat Ka Ying Rising for the first 800 metres. Ka Ying Rising has won 21 in a row, and David Hayes said that last year he came good about two days before his target and this year came good three weeks out, which makes him a different horse (Idol Horse)
